How to Make Pokemon Perler Bead Pins for Cosplay and Halloween

This Halloween e needed some Pokeballs and Pokemon to go with our costumes but didn't want to buy a lot of extras so we made some using Perler beads, safety pins and hot glue.
First we made the figures and then we let them cool. We put a line of hot glue on the back of each and then placed the safety pin and added a bit more glue on the spine of the safety pin. We held it straight until the glue started to cool and then let go. They took a few minutes to harden completely and we're ready for our costumes. They showed up really well in the photos and were fast and versatile.

Mustache Perler beads

Mustaches are really popular right now so the kids asked for these Perler Bead mustaches.

They really remind me of the little guy in the Lorax, just different colors.

Perler Bead retro cassette tape

This was such a fun retro cassette tape we made with Perler Beads.
We look around on Pinterest for ideas and usually change them just a bit (sometimes by accident),

This one only needs 4 colors and you could change the colors around depending on your supplies.

Minecraft Perler Bead figures

Minecraft is another favorite at our house and the kids love to play with these Minecraft figures we made.

These are Steve, a Creeper, a pig and a sheep. you can see on the creeper I ironed it a bit longer to make the beads more square and that also flattened the figure to be thinner.
They also love these little diamond swords, emerald and heart. The Emerald is also from Minecraft. The heart is just something fun we designed.

Pokemon Perler Beads 2

These little Perler Bead Pokemon were some of the best ones we have made so far.

There is Charmander (center), Squirtle (left) and Bulbasaur (right).
They were very fast to make and only used 4-5 colors maximum for each one but some of those were optional just to add shadows.

The Pokeball is a Great Ball.

Pokemon Perler beads

Our kids are really into Pokemon and these are a few of our recent creations with Perler Beads:

Zygarde and Rayquaza
Latias
Diglett
If you keep the iron on a little longer you can melt the beads long enough to close the circle and they become squares. This does lose some thickness of your final figure but can be a nice effect.

Nintendo Perler Beads - Toad and Gameboy

These were our a few requested by our kids today that we put together. They were really easy because they were pretty small and didn't use many colors for each figure.

Baymax Perler Bead Project

This was our little mini Baymax (from Disney's Big Hero 6 movie) we made out of Perler Beads. We found a similar pattern online but I thought he needed longer arms so modified it a little. It was so simple because it only needed black and white beads and was a basic outline with a few details.

We use a Perler Pen when we work with larger solid blocks like this one and it makes the project go so much faster. We just load a couple of pens with the main two colors and start clicking the beads onto the tray. It saves so much time to buy the beads in bags by color or in the divided trays and then load the pens with one color at a time.

(This was not a sponsored post but I have an affiliate account with Amazon if you decide to purchase any of these items through my link a small commission will be paid to our family to help keep the blog going and pay for the boys' Montessori tuition.)

Kirby Perler Bead project

This is an "Ice Kirby" we made out of perler beads. I found a pattern on pinterest and then modified it some to match the colors I had in my bead tray. They are so easy to make. You just place the beads copying a pattern or use your own design and then iron them (under a thin ironing paper that comes with the bead kits) and then iron the other side and you have a cute little figure.

Some tips we found are to make sure not to iron a crease in the paper or you will get line indentions on your figure (you can see in the second photo on the right foot there are some diagonal lines).

Also, when you first iron the beads just get them melted a small bit, enough to stay together while to take them off the plastic peg board. If you keep ironing while the beads are on the peg board you may cause it to warp. We had a couple that got a large raised part in the middle because of the heat of the iron and didn't realize it would happen.

You can then complete ironing both sides through the paper on the ironing board after you move the pegboard to the side.

Our kids love playing with these and they are kind of like instant custom toys because they can pick out a design online with us and then help us make the figure and play with it right away (after it cools off from the iron).

We buy our Perler Beads at Michael's when they have their 40% off coupons and also on Amazon because we can get really fast shipping and get points on our Amazon credit card, not to mention they are competitively priced.  I like to buy the beads in the bags by single color for some of our most used colors like black, white, gray and red. You can also by trays already organized by colors, but with less beads of each color.  We use the Perler Bead pen to help save our hands when placing the beads on the pegboard and also my husband likes to use a mechanical pencil to tip the beads into place.

(This was not a sponsored post however the link to perler beads and Amazon goes to my Amazon Affiliate link for a search I did on Perler Beads that shows some of our favorite products. We get a small comission if you purchase through our Amazon link. The proceeds go to support our blog and our children's Montessori education as we are currently living on one income.)
